The SLAM (Share Learn and Make) Space offers digitization equipment to preserve personal memories and copyright free material. Make digital copies of old photos, film, VHS, cassette tapes, and more!
Using digitization equipment requires training. Training will be held during your first SLAM Space reservation.
Scan Station
The Scan Station is used to make digital copies of photos, film, slides, books and other image or text-based items. It’s easy to use for large projects such as preserving family photo collections or quick projects like scanning a recipe to send to a friend. This station has two different devices, an Epson v850 and a ScanSnap SV600, which allow you to tackle all kinds of projects.
Epson V850
The Epson V850 is a scanner that allows you to create high-quality scans of photos, film, and transparencies. It operates in three different modes, full auto, home, and professional mode, which gives you as much control over your scans as you want. You can also use the specialty settings on the device to remove dust, scratches, and other forms of damage.
ScanSnap
The ScanSnap is an overhead scanner. It allows you to capture high quality scans of large, textured, or damaged and delicate items that might not work on a traditional scanner bed. This device also has settings that allow you to create searchable pdfs from text documents, scan multiple images at once while creating separate jpgs or pngs for each image, and correct warping in books and magazines to make a more easily read document.
Audio/Visual Station
The AV Station gives you all the equipment you need to convert old media into a new digital format. This station has equipment to convert CDs, DVDs and VHS, which with a bit of training can be used to make easily sharable and storable copies of your important memories.
VHS Player and UltraStudio HD Mini
These two devices allow you to take your old VHSs and create digital copies of them. The UltraStudio HD Mini connects the VHS player and computer, allowing it to capture and convert your important footage.
Cassette and Behringer UCA202
The cassette player is connected to the computer by Behringer UCA. The Behringer connects to the cassette player by RCA cable and the computer by USB. This allows you to capture the recorded audio without any outside interference or ambient sounds from the room you are working in.
Read and Write Disc Drive
The read and write disc drive allows you to take discs you already have and make digital copies of the information stored on them. This device also allows you to write information to discs.
Software
The library uses free and open-source software which means you can try a program out at the library and go home and use it on your personal device.
Gimp
GIMP is an image editor where you can make minor alterations to photos or enhance them to be out of this world. Whether you’re retouching, removing, or creating something completely new - this software can mold to your workflow and level of experience.
Krita
Krita is a digital art and 2D animation application. Paint, Sketch and Animate with this cool and easy to use program.
Blender
Blender is a 3D modeling and animation software. With this program you can make 3D designs, animate characters and create visual effects for films.
Kdenlive
Kdenlive is a video editing software you can use to create, edit and customize videos; whether it’s a home video to post on social media or a short film to enter a competition. The library uses this software with our VHS conversion process.
Crafting
Silhouette
The Silhouette Cameo is a cutting machine that allows you to make intricate designs out of paper, cardstock and vinyl. This machine is equipped with cutting and embossing tools which you can use with premade designs or use Silhouette’s software to create your own.
Laminator
Laminate important documents, make reusable check list or create fun dry erase boards using this handy little machine.
